Kanye West Delivers Confusing Rant on SNL

Kanye West was one of the guests on the season 44 premiere of Saturday Night Live.

SNL

He appeared on stage three times during the episode, but it’s what happened at the end that got spectators (and now the internet) talking. When the show was winding down, the 41- year old rapper delivered a political speech that quickly turned into an unstructured rant. He wore his “Make America Great Again” hat, which seems to be his accessory of choice lately, and and performed, “Ghost Town from Ye.” Then he delved into his charged monologue that ended up being cut short from the broadcast due to it’s excessive length (and probably because he started not making a lot of sense.)

Comedian and former SNL actor, Chris Rock, happened to be in the audience that night and began filming. From the video you can hear a mixed reaction from the audience. Some began with claps here and there. Some claps turned into boo’s as the speech turned into tirade. You can even hear rock say, “Oh my God,” under his breath.

It began getting political (which on SNL is fine,) when West said, “The blacks want always Democrats. You know, it’s like the plan they did, to take the fathers out the home and put them on welfare. Does anybody know about that? That’s a Democratic plan.” Not the normal light hearted SNL route to a political discussion.

Now here is where he lost the majority of the audience. “It’s so many times that I talk to like, a white person about this, and they say, ‘How could you like Trump? He’s racist.’ Well if I was concerned about racism, I would have moved out of America a long time ago. We don’t just make our decisions off of racism. I’ma break it down to you right now: If someone inspires me and I connect with them, I don’t have to believe in all they policies,” said the rapper.

He was also sure to mention his plan to run in the 2020 election. Ironically he also said, “We need to have a dialogue and not a diatribe.”

After a confusing gesture with his MAGA hat, West wrapped it up with, “Follow your heart and stop following your mind. That’s how we’re controlled, that’s how we’re programmed. And you want the world to move forward? Try love. Thank ya’ll for giving me this platform. I know some ya’ll don’t agree.”

Sunday morning he tweeted about how he has a great time on SNL and noted he was told he would get the opportunity to host again before the end of the year. That’s not the only thing he tweeted post SNL speech. He also made everyone even more lost when he tweeted about abolishing the 13th Amendment.

The 13th Amendment is what is credited with ending slavery in the United States. While some people assume he is talking about the crime and punishment portion of the famous law, most are still outraged he would support throwing away the Amendment entirely since it is such a landmark moment for the country.

The 13 Amendment of the United States Constitution reads in whole, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
