A multi-year study regarding the best location for Port Huron’s Amtrak Station has concluded, and the findings suggest that the station won’t be moving from 16th Street anytime soon. Dave McElroy, General Manager of Blue Water Area Transit tells WPHM the current site is the best site for the station.
“We couldn’t really go north of the existing tracks because customs will stop trains and do inspections for hours,” said McElroy. “That would really affect Amtrak’s service if the rails were blocked by a train for four or five hours.”
McElroy says Blue Water Transit’s share of the project is now complete, and that it would be up to the Michigan Department of Transportation or Amtrak to decide whether or not to take heed of the report’s findings.
“There are some improvements proposed… additional parking… areas for easier drop off,” says McElroy. “We feel we are complete, and if any other stakeholder would like to use this report to move forward with making improvements to the station, they’re more than welcome to.”
The entire report can be found at www.bwbus.com. Amtrak operates the Blue Water line from Port Huron to Chicago with one round trip train daily.
