An East China high school robotics team is moving on to the global stage after taking top honors recently at a state-wide tournament. Team Flurb – made up of students from both St. Clair and Marine City high schools – was part of the winning alliance at the FIRST Robotics State Championship in Saginaw over the weekend. Students from White Lake, Milford, and Kalamazoo also participating in that alliance. Flurb’s robot “Shelley” helped secure the title thanks, according to judges, to its custom vision system and adaptive drivetrain. The win qualifies the team for the FIRST Robotics World Championship happening April 16th through the 19th in Houston, Texas. The team has confirmed they’ll be making the trip to Houston, thanks to overwhelming community support – raising more than $51,000 in donations in less than 48 hours to cover the cost.
Team members include; Claire Amend, Colin Amend, Jocelyn Forsythe, Chloe Furtah, Thomas McLarney, Hunter Mitchenall, Kaynon Quesada, Andrew Pressman, Maria Starin, Adam Zyjewski, Calvin Cagle, and Katie Emerson.
