Dozens of women bared their breasts and marched in New York for topless rights as part of a coordinated worldwide GoTopless Day. The march in New York, where it has been legal for women to go topless in public since 1992, aimed to desexualize female toplessness and take a stand for a woman’s right to bare her breasts amid promises from New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to crack down on topless panhandlers in Times Square. The topless marchers, which some reports counted at up to 300, held signs bearing slogans including “women’s breasts are family friendly” and “desexualize boobies.” GoTopless Day events were planned in about 60 other cities Sunday, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin and San Francisco
A Virginia man has been arrested in connection with the theft of about $2 million worth of gold and silver bars and rare coins from the home of a Fairfax County couple. James Martinez has been charged with grand larceny with intent to sell; the items were taken from his neighbor’s home. The victim had collected more than 1,400 ounces of gold and 5,300 ounces of silver, including gold bars of various sizes and valuable coins from foreign countries. The owner told detectives that he suspected Martinez had carried out the theft because Martinez knew he collected gold and silver and had been inside his house on many occasions to do odd jobs and care for his dog. The victim also noticed that Martinez had spent large amounts of money in recent months. Investigators discovered that Martinez had sold large amounts of gold and silver at pawnshops over the past year, including more than $340,000 worth to one shop in Alexandria. The items matched those in the victim’s collection.
