Funding needed to continue dredging

If you use the Black River canal as a short cut for your boat into lake Huron, you probably noticed it was getting filled in with sand more than usual last year. Higher lake levels and several northeast winds contributed to fill-ins at the canal’s opening into Lake Huron, says Port Huron City Manager James Freed. The city of Port Huron has had trouble funding continued canal dredging operations, which costs between $25-$35 thousand annually, and is hoping to get some relief from neighboring Fort Gratiot and Port Huron townships. Freed notes the reason the city is seeking help from neighboring townships, is that many of their residents have homes along the Black River, and will benefit from the continued dredging of the canal. No deal has gone before the city council yet, but Freed says he’s getting positive vibes about the project.
