THE MORNING ROAST 8/2/16

Crashing a car was bad enough, but investigators say it led to two people in inside the vehicle being attacked by a swarm of bees. It happened last week in Laurel County, KY. Gary Lee Anderson, who lives on the road and saw it all happen. “And all of a sudden I heard a big ‘boom,’ and I looked back out my door and the electric pole fell and the lines were falling. And the GeoTracker was sideways into the fence.” Then the folks inside the car–identified as Noah Elkins, 36, and Priscilla Simpson, 35–got a big surprise. “He didn’t know it – but he found out – that there was a hive of bees there,” said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, “and he had disturbed them.” Anderson says they ran up the road, grabbed a hose outside his home and started trying to spray off the bees. Investigators said they had driven down the road looking for a place to swim–Simpson was just wearing a bikini during the bee attack. The couple were taken to the hospital for treatment for injuries from the crash and for “numerous” bee stings, deputies said. Elkins was cited for driving under the influence, as well as other traffic violations. Simpson was charged with public intoxication.

Getting pulled over is never fun. You get that sinking feeling the second you see the lights in your rearview mirror. Some people start planning an excuse and others start to worry. How fast was I going? Is my tail light out? How much will the ticket be? On a hot summer day, with temps in the 90s, Halifax Police Chief Kevin Lands and Officer Brian Warner decided to try a different approach. A video posted to Facebook by the two Virginia police officers is getting a lot of attention — for all the right reasons. Lands can be seen pulling over a driver and giving her ice cream instead of a ticket.  A note with the video says: “It’s hot out there today so the Halifax Police Department decided to cool down some speeders. With ice-cream.” The pair purchased ice cream cones and handed them out to citizens instead of tickets. When asked why he did it, Chief Lands said that he and Officer Warner, “wanted to try and put some smiles on people’s faces.” Mission accomplished. The video is up on our twitter, find that through WBTI.com!

Most women experience menstrual cramps when it’s their time of the month but now a company may have solved some of your discomfort. There’s an alternative to downing ibuprofen by the handful: Foria, the makers of marijuana lube, have introduced cannabis vaginal suppositories to help ease the pain. Doctors have used other forms of the known pain reliever to treat menstrual cramps before. Morton Barke, M.D., a retired gynecologist and medical director of a California medical marijuana evaluation center, told Racked that cannabis is a “fantastic modality” for helping patients with dysmenorrhea, or painful menstrual periods. Foria Relief “tampons” ($44 per 4-pack) contain only three (all natural!) ingredients: organic cocoa butter, CO2 extracted cannabis oil, and a cannabidiol (CBD) isolate, one of the main chemicals in marijuana. When inserted, the ingredients activate cannabinoid receptors in the pelvic region and cause nerves in the uterus, cervix, and ovaries to block pain. For those wondering about the obvious question here: No, it doesn’t get you high. This particular delivery system sends the medicine directly to where it’s needed, maximizing the “muscle relaxing and pain relieving properties of cannabis without inducing a psychotropic high. Customer reviews for the product say it helped relieve cramps in as little as eight minutes, and even left one user “decidedly dreamy,” though some said it wasn’t effective on back pain.
