The police force in Harris County “thought they had the biggest bust” their Texas town had seen in decades for methamphetamine, according to Ross LeBeau. LeBeau just finished up three nights in the county jail for being the owner of a sock full of… kitty litter.
A normal traffic stop led to the discovery of what was thought to be an entire sock full of methamphetamine. Initially the car was searched because of a marijuana odor. LeBeau admitted to having some in the console, then when searched, the police thought they found something more worth their while. The sock full of kitty litter was in his car to keep the windows from fogging up in the winter. Kitty litter absorbs the moisture in the air and decreases the chance of fog forming inside your car. Skeptical? Here is a video.
Before tests could be ran in a forensics lab, LeBeau was booked, had his name stated in a press release with his mug shot and was officially in the system. While in jail, Lebeau received a criminal record and lost his job.
The first two drug tests done on the sock were done in the field and came back positive. This is actually a common problem with drug field tests nationwide. Many innocent substances can return a false positive test and apparently kitty litter is one of them.
After the forensics test came back, proving LeBeau’s innocence, the case was dismissed and he was released. But LeBeau’s battle is far from over. Now that he is unemployed and has an arrest record he will be fighting adversity wherever he goes. LeBeau and his attorney, George Reul, are working tirelessly to expunge his record. “I’m going to do everything in my power to clear my name,” says LeBeau.
