We all know that the field sobriety test can be difficult, even for those who are sober. We have all seen cam footage of someone getting mad because they can’t do their ‘A-B-C’s” backwards or just have terrible coordination and can’t stand on one foot. But what do you think when someone starts doing cartwheels during their sobriety test?
Surprise, New Mexico resident, Bryelle Marshall wasn’t sober.
Albuquerque police were responding to calls that stated a black Volkswagen was driving recklessly . They found a vehicle matching the description in a trailer park, almost in the driveway, but not quite all the way pulled in. Marshall was still inside of the car, passed out.
The cops got her to wake up and asked her to step outside of the vehicle for a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, (SFST.) Police describe Marshall as seemingly intoxicated and reeking of alcohol. When asked to proceed with the basics of the SFST, she had a hard time doing what they asked.
Footage shows the officer trying to get her set up to walk a straight line, while he is asking her to face a certain way she starts stumbling around and asks him, “where is ‘this’ direction.”
Marshall then tries to lift up her arms to begin a cartwheel, still not facing the correct way. Confused, the cop says, “We aren’t doing yoga, I don’t know what you’re doing.”
And then she finally does a cartwheel, but she doesn’t just do one. Marshall keeps doing cartwheels instead of her sobriety test. The police officer asks her to stop several times and reminds her how serious this is.
When he finally thinks she’s going to walk the straight line and she’s facing the right direction she… does half of a cartwheel and half of a summersault.
The police officer audible mutters, “whatever.”
At the very end of the video the officer is understandably irritated and when her final cartwheel actually runs into him mid-turn, he says, “we’re done.”
Marshall is being charged with battery, aggravated DWI and, the cherry on-top of a bad night, driving with an expired license. Watch the body-cam footage below!
