Pink Tap Water Freaking Out Canadians

Flint has been without clean drinking water since April 2014, but what would happen if it was TOO clean? That’s what people in the small Alberta town of Onoway are experiencing right now!

This past Monday, residents found that their tap water was a bright shade of pink! And of course, this latest water crisis blew up social media. While Pepto Bismal is a shade of color that would concern any sane person, government officials claim their drinking water is perfectly safe. And the explanation is pretty reasonable, too: The mayor said it was the unfortunate side-effect of a common water-treatment chemical, potassium permanganate. The chemical is commonly used to remove iron and hydrogen sulphide from water, and the town office said it got into the reservoir when a valve malfunctioned during “normal line flushing and filter backwashing”.
