Yes, you read that title right: the electric mouse Pokemon that uses deductive reasoning to solve crimes will be voiced by 2010’s Sexiest Man Alive. Personally, I would have voted for him this year, but somehow Blake Shelton won the honor. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Pokemon franchise had been huge ever since it kicked off in the mid 90’s. There have been 18 games in the main series alone and numerous other spin off games including the globally popular Pokemon Go AR phone app. And while there’s been a long-running cartoon and many full-length animated features, fans have been clamoring for a live-action Pokemon movie. You think they’d be happy to get what they want, though this game-to-screen adaptation leaves more than a few people scratching their heads.
See, of all the games and spin-offs to select, this one is a strange selection to make into a movie. Kotaku.com describes the game like this:
“Great Detective Pikachu is a video game released in Japan (and Japan only) in 2016. You play as a regular kid walking around trying to solve mysteries, only you’re also accompanied by Pikachu, who can now talk and wears a Sherlock Holmes hat.”

So, this is based off of a game that was never released in North America with a Canadian megastar voicing and motion capturing a character that hasn’t spoken in any other depiction save for one, and people NOT on board with it then. Maybe if it was some sort of Japanese adaptation of an existing project it would make more sense? Whether this is a “be careful what you wished for scenrio” or something that will be legitimately good is yet to be seen as filming for the project doesn’t start until early next year in London. As of now, I can’t help but picture that ——->
I’ve decided I’m going to remain cautiously optimists about Deadpool actor in the role. Though, I am a huge fan of a genetically engineered raccoon with an affinity for guns, so maybe I’m not the guy to listen to on this topic.
